Curious Investigators Discovered how to work out how old a tree was when it was felled. Out of School Club members got to be the first to look at the chopped up logs left after the maple tree blown down a few days ago had been made safe and cut up by a team earlier in the day. We discovered not only were the logs great for clambering and balancing but we could count the rings exposed in the trunk to get a good idea of the age of the tree. We also found that painting the rings with water made them easier to see and count. We think that the tree was about 36 years old - each year it grows a bit more to make another ring. This means it might have been planted when the school was built or soon after. We are going to track down some old photos to see what was here back then.
